You’ve probably searched the Internet for tips on how to bet on sports and win. And the truth is most of those tips are completely bogus or basic knowledge that everyone knows. People will write anything if they know it will convince someone to purchase something. I’m not selling you anything. I’m here to help you start winning at the sportsbooks. Why? Because I’m just such a nice guy. Everyone thinks they know a little something about how to make money betting on sports. But not everyone has my results. So, without further adieu, here are 5 sports betting tips that will help you immensely.
Tip #1: If it appears too good to be true, it probably is
We’ve all seen those spreads that just make no sense whatsoever. You think one team is so much better than the other but they’re only a 2-point favorite so you jump on it and then that team loses the game. Vegas knows more than you think about sports. When you find a game like that, do some research and find out why the team you think is vastly superior is only a 2-point favorite. If you dig deep enough you’ll find out the reason.
Tip #2: Always look for value in your bets
Sometimes there’s really no point in placing a certain wager. For example, if a team is –560 on the moneyline, you need to wager $560 just to win $100. Yes, when a team is that big of a favorite they are going to win most of the time. But you’re risking too much to win very little. Find bets that are closer to even money (i.e. –110 against the spread where you wager $110 to win $100) on games that you are confident the team will cover. That’s a smart value bet.
Tip #3: Never go “all-in”
I’ve seen it a million times. An alleged great sports bettor thinks a game is a “lock” so he places a ridiculous wager that crushes his bankroll after that “lock” turns out to be a loss. Keep your bets steady. Some games you can up the ante, but most wagers should be the same amount. If you bet $110 on one game, bet $110 on other games. Don’t place $110 on one game and $25,000 on another. There’s no such thing as a lock. Strange things happen in sports. Every sports better learns this the hard way.
Tip #4: Don’t just throw darts
Do you ever wonder how sometimes the lady from Accounting that knows nothing about college basketball somehow manages to win the office NCAA Tournament Pool by picking winners based on favorite team names? She got lucky. Relying on luck won’t get you anywhere with sports betting. Winning at the sportsbooks requires smart, educated bets. Picking winners based on the teams you root for and the teams that have the best jerseys is a losing proposition in the long run.
Tip #5: Know how teams fair in specific game conditions
The one thing that many sports bettors fail to do is factor in game conditions. They take a look at two teams and determine one team is 5-6 points better than the other when handicapping the game. However, there is more to handicapping games than just Team A is x-points superior to Team B. If rain is in the forecast, how well equipped to handle the rain are these teams? How well does the road team play on the road? There are many factors in determining which team to wager on and it’s not always as simple as determining that – on a neutral field – one team is superior by so many points.
